From 7 to 13 May 2025, the railway section between Pontresina and Poschiavo, part of the famous Bernina Line of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB), will be completely closed to rail traffic due to maintenance work in the Val Varuna II tunnel.

During this period, replacement buses will be in operation between Pontresina and Poschiavo to ensure passenger mobility. In addition, trains will run sporadically between Pontresina and Cavaglia.

The works in the Val Varuna II tunnel include the completion of the interior finishes, the construction of the portals and the dismantling of the installation and logistics areas. The last phase involves the restoration of the land in the tunnel area to its original state. The completion of the works is scheduled for summer 2025.

The Bernina Line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most spectacular railways in the world, connecting St. Moritz to Tirano through breathtaking alpine landscapes. During the closure period, travelers are invited to consult the updated online timetable to better plan their trips.

Bernina Train

The Bernina Train is a fascinating panoramic railway line that connects St. Moritz, Switzerland, to the Italian city of Tirano, crossing the Alps with a unique route in the world. Operated by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB), this train passes through spectacular landscapes made up of glaciers, alpine lakes, forests and small mountain villages, offering passengers an unforgettable travel experience.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bernina Line is famous for extraordinary engineering works, such as the helical viaduct of Brusio, and for the altitude reached: with its 2,253 meters at the Bernina Pass it is the highest standard gauge railway in Europe without the use of racks. The train operates all year round and allows you to enjoy the intense colors of autumn, snowy winter landscapes, spring blooms and the bright blue of the lakes in summer.

The Bernina Express, with its panoramic glass carriages, is the ideal choice for tourists, while regional trains offer the same route with more flexibility and lower costs. A journey aboard the Bernina Train is not just a journey, but an adventure through nature, culture and alpine history.
