<2 a.m>Ascension and Whitsun: 75 thousand extra seats on SBB trains to travel between German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. The Swiss Federal Railways is responding to the expected influx of passengers with 40 special trains and additional carriages
On the occasion of the upcoming Ascension (29 May) and Pentecost (9 June) bridges, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced major enhancements to its rail offering. In response to the expected high volume of passengers, in particular between German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, 40 special trains will be put into operation, accompanied by additional carriages on regular trains, including EuroCity connections to Italy.
The goal is clear: offer 75 thousand additional seats and allow smoother travel during holiday weekends, notoriously among the busiest of the year. However, SBB says that despite the extraordinary measures, the turnout on some trains may remain high, which is why seat reservations are strongly recommended and advance travel planning.
On the official portal ffs.ch and via the SBB Mobile app, you can view the current timetable, which also includes the traffic forecast for each train. In this way, travelers can choose the least congested time slots and better organize their trips.
Particular attention is also paid to the transport of bicycles. From 21 March to 31 October 2025, trains passing through the Gotthard Base Tunnel the obligation to reserve bicycles applies. Trains with compulsory reservations are indicated in the timetable by means of the bicycle icon. Alternatively, SBB offers bicycle shipping services, both between stations and door-to-door, an ideal option for those who want to travel lighter.
Also for luggage there is a direct transport service to the destination, available online in the section "Send your luggage or take it with you".
With these measures, SBB is preparing to promote tourism and internal mobility, in particular towards Ticino, a very popular destination on spring weekends. Thanks to the special trains and the increase in the number of seats available, those who want to spend a few relaxing days south of the Alps can count on an enhanced and more comfortable rail offer.
